Most uPVC windows are held shut by an espagnolette - a locking device operated by the handle. This espagnolette can fail and leave you with a window that will not open, but this doesn't mean you need to replace the whole window. uPVC window hinges are called friction hinges or friction stays. A common reason for a friction stay failure is that the black or grey plastic block in the hinge groove shatters.
